‘Keys’

OR:

‘Home is where the heart is…
apart from when the locks are
changed, then it is just a house.”

2011

The key is an important object of human kinds evolution, both within a technological and psychological development. The idea of personal space and security of others, then in turn the nature of power and responsibility that lends self with these objects in mass. The key as a signifier is seen an authority and power. A looked door is a door that needs to be kept in safe, responsible hands. Even the handing over the front door key to a family home to a young adult is seen as a right of passage. The security of the family is at sake; there lies the responsibility of the key.

The progression of man and the concept of engineering to produce these highly sophisticated mechanisms. It is said that the key its self, was invented by Theodore of Samos, within the 6th Century BC and demonstrates mechanized thinking from this point on in history. The key and lock it self have long since devolved from a simple wooden mechanism to a highly sophisticated, micro engineered devise using many type of materials in its production.

This collection of keys presented in this publication is a selection of properties I have inhabited from 2008-2011. The memories, responsibilities and power I had over these have gone. All the locks have been changed, leaving these once important keys in my life, just humble pieces of cut metal compounds. I have long since forgotten address’, along with acquaintances that I used to live with within these buildings.
